Blessings Altar

Bright Blessings!

I am reviving my Thursday Healing List, and hopefully many other aspects of this blog. As I was assembling my new Reiki Grid, I decided to make an outdoor space for the Grid, along with a place to meditate, make offerings, and general gratitude and blessings.

Luckily, I have a lovely little space on the West side of our property.

It is currently the site of another failed attempt to grow veggies in the High Desert climate of Southern Arizona. The small herb garden, however, is thriving and I will concentrate on growing that area. since they seem to resist the critters and the heat.

Sweet mint, chocolate mint, sage, rosemary, and thyme have so far survived. Because I am obsessed with putting rocks around everything in my garden, that is in process, now that I have decided to shrink the garden down to just the herb patch. I took the cinder blocks from around the veggie bed (aka the Pack Rat Buffet) and made a little altar area.
Then I made my Reiki Grid, and added in some offering bowls and my little oil lamp. I added a chair to sit and do my energy work and meditation. I also plan to add some pavers to the area in front of the shrine to put a yoga mat when I go outside. You can see I can store stuff like lamp oil under and smaller items in the cells of the blocks. I have a Mason jar with the Healing List names tucked in under the grid so they don't get wt in the rain or blow away.

It's a work in progress, but it's a start! I'm pretty pleased with it after just an hour of work, so who knows what it will become as I spend time out there and continue to add to it. Also, since it's right under my window I will see the grid even when I'm not outside in the space, and my intention will direct energy into the grid when I catch a glimpse of it.

If you want a name on the Healing List, please comment below or email me at pheonixfae@gmail.com. You can also comment on Facebook or Twitter

Meditation Bowl

I have been lost for a while now. Let me be clear, I have chosen to remain lost, to some extent, for a while now. Some of this has been out of my control and remains so, and has been steadily improving with the help of my doctor. Some of this has been my choice to not nurture the light in my life, and a choice to wallow in the quicksand of my dark thoughts.

I am taking a step now, to bring daily meditation and prayer back into a place of priority in my life. I used to be really good at this. I used to meditate for at least one short session a day, and prayer was second nature, like a commentary to Divine in my head.
Now, I have to remind myself to pray even once a day. Is it the worst crime of my battle with depression and anxiety that I allowed my connection to my faith and spirit be damaged, and took so long to repair it.

But, repair it I will, and I am taking a step today to re-establish my meditative practice. I am making a Meditation Bowl, and I encourage you to do the same if you wish to establish or strengthen your own meditative practice.

The Mayo Clinic has this to say about meditation:

Benefits of meditation
Meditation and emotional well-being
When you meditate, you clear away the information overload that builds up every day and contributes to your stress.
  • Gaining a new perspective on stressful situations
  • Building skills to manage your stress
  • Increasing self-awareness
  • Focusing on the present
  • Reducing negative emotions
Meditation and illness
Meditation also might be useful if you have a medical condition, especially one that may be worsened by stress. While a growing body of scientific research supports the health benefits of meditation, some researchers believe it's not yet possible to draw conclusions about the possible benefits of meditation.
Meditation can give you a sense of calm, peace and balance that benefits both your emotional well-being and your overall health. And these benefits don't end when your meditation session ends. Meditation can help carry you more calmly through your day and can even improve certain medical conditions.
The emotional benefits of meditation include:
With that in mind, some research suggests that meditation may help such conditions as:

  • Allergies
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Asthma
  • Binge eating
  • Cancer
  • Depression
  • Fatigue
  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Pain
  • Sleep problems
  • Substance abuse
With this in mind, and knowing how much taking the time to meditate has helped me in the past, I am taking this step to make a visual and emotional cue to both remind me to meditate, and help me get to that head space for peace and thoughtfulness.

The Meditation Bowl

Supplies
  • small bowl
  • Sea Salt
  • tea light or votive candle and holder
  • tumbled stones for meditation or root chakra (amethyst, rose quartz, clear quartz, aquamarine, turquoise, black obsidian, hematite, etc.)
Cleanse the bowl and stones, then sprinkle 3 pinches of salt in the bottom of the bowl. Add the candle and stones, then place in a high traffic place in your home where it will be seen every day. Try to meditate, concentrating on the lit candle in the bowl, for as little as a few minutes a day to get into the habit of mindfulness and meditation. Let me know about your meditative practices, and check back for guided meditations!

Gratitude Prayer 6/14/13

Divine, I call to thee.
I look upon your many faces, I call your many names.
I thank you for the blessings that fill my life, and I thank you for the failures and hardships, which have changed my course on this journey.
I thank you for the gentle days, when my faith and blessings sprouted around my feet, and I thank you for the storms which cleared a space for new growth.
As I walk the Path before me, I know that in the darkest times, you tend the ember within me, the spark which ignites my passion, the lick of flame which feeds the beacon torch.
I send up blessings, I praise your names, I live to honor you, and the ways of the Wise.
Brightest Blessings

Prayers for Elwood, IN

I know there is a lot of crazy going around out country this week, but I would like to make a personal request. My sister and many good friends still live in Elwood and are reliving a nightmare that has, unfortunately, happened before.

Please pray for my hometown of Elwood, Indiana which is flooded. The area received 5+ inches of rain in 24 hrs and then the weather turned cold and windy, making rescue efforts even harder.
This shot is looking down at my old neighborhood, and the house I grew up in. My sister lives there now and had to turn off the furnace despite the cold last night when the water reached the duct work under the house.
This is the front yard,a big difference from the pic of it I posted when we lived there!

And she took a video of the back yard, here is the before from 2011

The rest of town isn't doing so hot either

So I thank you for taking a moment to give a thought to my tiny little hometown!

Crochet-a-Long

Over the last month I have been teaching myself to crochet. You may have noticed...lol.
For a long time I had wanted to knit, and never really “got it”. I struggled with it, and was not very good or quick, and so didn't enjoy it. Someone told me that knit and crochet is kind of like algebra and geometry, people usually only understand one of the other. With that in mind, I went to the store and bought a cheap pack of plastic crochet hooks and some yarn, then came home and dove into how-to videos on YouTube on crochet.
As I am want to do, I dove in with both feet and have become obsessed. I spent every free moment in the past month with a hook in my hand. I crochet while dogs are drying. I crochet while taking a break from housework. I took a project to not one but two cookouts and crocheted while I sat outside and visited. I have even started a Stitch'n Bitch group that will begin meeting on the 18th!
The first week I made hats and the tarot bag I posted here, and then I made an afghan for myself. The afghan proved to me that I had found the thing for me in crochet, because I went off pattern and it turned out great.
When I craft, it's kind of like when I cook. Instructions and recipes are more 'guidelines', and I usually take the general idea and shoot off sideways with it. I know for sure I have never made two pots of chili that were the same, and my craft projects tend to run that way. For the afghan I started with a pattern, expanded it a little, and added a ruffle from another pattern, which I also use in the pattern below.

Mojo and one of the new kittens, Walter have test-napped it and it's a winner.

So, why is this posted on Metaphysical Thursday? Glad you asked. I have started making Christmas/Yule gift, and one of the things that several ladies in my family will be getting are Prayer Shawls (shhh, don't tell them)
I stumbled across this when I was searching the webternets for patterns. The idea is to concentrate prayer, blessings, and healing thoughts for the recipient before, during, and after the construction of the shawl.
I love this idea, and on the site for the Prayer Shawl Ministry there are Goddess prayers represented. So I started my first Prayer Shawl immediately after finishing the afghan, and after about 3 hours of looking at patterns on that site and many others, I just decided to wing it. I think it is pretty good so far, for a beginner, so if you would like to Crochet-a-long, here is the pattern, such as it is. And don't worry about blowing the surprise for my sister, she is WAY to Christian to come on her little sister's witchy blog!
Here is a preview of how the pattern is turning out, I will post a photo of the finished product when it's done.

I have a couple of pics in the pattern to clarify for beginners the stitching in the space as opposed to the stitch because that threw me off in the hat pattern I used for the girls hats at first. The hat was becoming like a shower puff because I misunderstood and I had to take apart an hours work. I hope to help others avoid it, there was much profanity involved!

So to begin, say a prayer to bless your work. You can make your own or there are many at the Shawl Ministry site. Then concentrate on prayer, healing, and positive energy for the recipient as you crochet, When it's done, bless it and give it to it's intended owner. It's a great, loving gift for someone battling illness or loss, or just to send love out to someone as a gift.

Valerie's Prayer Shawl
#4 Worsted yarn, Red Heart Sonoma Stripe or other self-striping yarn
US K/10.5 hook
SC=single crochet
DC=double crochet
TC=treble crochet

Chain 50, loosely (if using foundation stitch, count as the first row)
Rows 1-3 SC fifty, chain 1, turn
Rows 4-6 DC in 1st stitch, chain one, skip stitch to end of row, chain 1, turn
Row 7 SC in the top of the DC in the last row

and in the SPACE between each DC

to end of row, chain 1, turn

Rows 8-9 SC to end of row, chain 1, turn
repeat Rows 4-9 until shawl reaches 'hug' size, fingertips to fingertips with your arms outstretched. It looks like mine will be around 132 rows.
Finishing
Do not turn, SC in same stitch to turn the corner and SC down the side the number of rows the shawl ended with, SC again in the last stitch to turn the corner and SC down this side 50. Repeat down the remaining 2 sides.

If you prefer fringe, stop here and add fringe to the ends. Val's shawl has a ruffle along 3 sides.
If adding a ruffle do not turn, chain 4 then TC into same stitch as the chain 4.
Continue 2 TC in each stitch down the short side, then 4 TC in the corner stitch. Continue around the long side and back up the opposite short side.
Chain 4 and turn.
Work 1 TC chain 1 into each stitch all the way back around, and do TC, chain 1 TC, chain 1 in each of the 4 at the corners
Tie off, weave in ends.

I would love to hear from anyone who gives it a try, and to see what yours looks like!
Happy Hooking!
H.W.

Serena Update, this is strange

I posted last night for Reiki and prayers for a missing 10 yr old girl, who was thankfully found late last evening. In a bizarre twist of events, my local news is today reporting that the girl's great-grandmother was reported missing at 2am Wednesday. Here is the story from the WTHR website...
********
TIPTON - Police have found a 10-year-old Tipton girl who went missing Tuesday evening.
Police say she was taken by a man she describes as "tall," white, about 40 years old and thin with short brown hair. He was wearing a gray T-shirt and gray shorts. He was wearing Nike tennis shoes.
Police quote the child as saying the man drove a newer, smaller silver four-door car. She told them the pair "drove around" from the time of her disappearance until she was dropped off at the Wendy's restaurant at 151st and U. S. 31 in Westfield.
She was found by Westfield police just before 11:00pm.
Tipton police had mobilized a broad search in her hometown and countywide, even using the Hamilton County sheriff's department's bloodhound search team.
Neighbors stood on street corners handing out homemade flyers with Serena Weicht's photo. Some students heading out the flyers cried when they learned she was safe and sound.
Just before 2 o'clock Wednesday morning, Noblesville police reported Weicht's great grandmother was missing. They report they were called to 74-year-old Dorothy M. Heard's Noblesville home Tuesday afternoon. At that time, they say, they were told by family members that she had been missing since Monday evening.
Family members say disappearance is uncharacteristic of Ms. Heard. They say her car was left at her home.
Dorothy Heard is a white female, 5'2' tall, weighing 137 pounds. She has gray hair and blue eyes.
Anyone with information regarding the disappearance of Ms. Heard is urged to contact the Noblesville Police Department at (317) 776-6371.
********
The police agencies involved are saying that the two cases seem unrelated, other than the girl and the woman being family. I will be including this on my Reiki list tomorrow. This story was on fire on my Facebook network last night, and I know Tipton as a community mobilized instantly to find this child, and is still wondering where Dorothy is. I will post another update as this develops.

Prayers please

My Facebook is blowing up tonight with the story of a 10 yr old girl abducted while riding her bike in the next little town over from me. Please send thoughts, prayers, Reiki, and any other good JuJu to help police find Serena. She has been gone almost 5 hours now. What little info there is can be found on HERE. If you live in this area and have ANY information please call the Tipton police Dept, (765) 675-2111.
EDIT: shortly after posting this, Tipton police confirmed that Serena has been found safe. I would, however, ask you continue to send prayer to this poor child and her family.

Prayer to the Morrigan

Blessed Morrigan, whose sacred names are three, I do not pray for strength, for you show me the strength within me. I do not pray for courage, for I follow you willingly into battle. I do not pray for wisdom, for you teach me of the Crone within me. I do not pray for blessings, because I live each day in blessed Magick, following the ways of the wise. I do not pray for prosperity, for I live in gratitude of the abundance which flows through my life. I do not pray for love, for love runs like water to me through my family and friends. I pray to remember these gifts, for in my despair I can lose my way, and lose my awareness that I am a daughter of your ways. I pray to remember that when I look into my image, your face is reflected there, and I can carry any burden because you live within me.

Reiki Thursday

Welcome back to Reiki Thursday! Please leave your name, general location, and need in the comments to be added to the healing list.

I am in an especially prayerful mood today, so I invite you all to pray for those on my list at the moment. Remember you get back what you put out, so send out love joyfully and you will get it back in abundance.

Brandi in Indianapolis
Lady Rose
Mojo (getting 1st vax today...poor baby!)
Hippie Witch (who will be holding Mojo during shots, hard on a Mama)
Jennifer

I am using the prayer below, but please pray in your own way, no matter the name you call god, or just think about those listed here and wish good things for them. It does not have to be fancy or long, just intended. Namaste

O Divine
I send energy joyfully and with love out into the universe. May it go where it is needed to heal, to comfort those who wish to receive it. I throw blessings onto the wind like the seeds of a flower and know they will grow where they land. Blessed Be.
H.W.

Goddess, I pray

O blessed Mother
I see you, radiant in a star-filled sky and know your pale face is looking down upon me. Fill the well within my heart with the gifts you have for me. The wonder of the Maiden, the patience of the Mother, the wisdom of the Crone. Let me always remember you are with me, beside me, and within me, always. She who calls the name of god shall never stand alone, and I feel you beside me now, your hand on my shoulder and your whispered breath in my ear. I call it out now, the names you have had since the beginning of time and names yet to be spoken. I know you, as you have always known me and called out to my soul as a child of your ways, and in that knowledge I am held safe. I am blessed. I am loved. Blessed Be.
