Monday Message 7/31/17

Monday Message
July 31st 2017

Walls and defenses have their place. They have protected your tender heart and battered soul while you healed from your wounds. Protection and isolation are two different things. Stay behind your walls and find stillness, find peace, and find your center. Then you are ready to open the door and let yourself be filled. Remember, you are the bouncer to your inner self. Only let in what is bright and shining and helpful. Do not, however, languish in an ivory tower and let your stillness deafen you to the song of the Universe.

Monday Message- 7/24/17

The Dark Lady
Myk the Myomancer
The Faery Who Was Kissed by the Pixies-Reversed

Deep within you, there are seeds of such unimaginable wonder. They remain there, untouched by the light of the Sun or the nourishment of the loamy Earth. The strange fruit they would become remains a mystery, because you leave them closed up tightly, hermetically sealed within your darkest self. Are you afraid to know, or are you afraid because you know the cost of letting such seeds be sown?

I feel it is the latter. The hints are all around you, but you lack the tools of the gardener. These tools are the courage to begin, knowing failure and blight are just as likely as lush success, and the patience to be a good and faithful steward to your growth.

Love yourself enough to let the Sun shine into your soul. Spread love around like fertilizer, and watch what springs forth with abandon. That love and light will be returned to you in spades.

Blessings Altar

Bright Blessings!

I am reviving my Thursday Healing List, and hopefully many other aspects of this blog. As I was assembling my new Reiki Grid, I decided to make an outdoor space for the Grid, along with a place to meditate, make offerings, and general gratitude and blessings.

Luckily, I have a lovely little space on the West side of our property.

It is currently the site of another failed attempt to grow veggies in the High Desert climate of Southern Arizona. The small herb garden, however, is thriving and I will concentrate on growing that area. since they seem to resist the critters and the heat.

Sweet mint, chocolate mint, sage, rosemary, and thyme have so far survived. Because I am obsessed with putting rocks around everything in my garden, that is in process, now that I have decided to shrink the garden down to just the herb patch. I took the cinder blocks from around the veggie bed (aka the Pack Rat Buffet) and made a little altar area.
Then I made my Reiki Grid, and added in some offering bowls and my little oil lamp. I added a chair to sit and do my energy work and meditation. I also plan to add some pavers to the area in front of the shrine to put a yoga mat when I go outside. You can see I can store stuff like lamp oil under and smaller items in the cells of the blocks. I have a Mason jar with the Healing List names tucked in under the grid so they don't get wt in the rain or blow away.

It's a work in progress, but it's a start! I'm pretty pleased with it after just an hour of work, so who knows what it will become as I spend time out there and continue to add to it. Also, since it's right under my window I will see the grid even when I'm not outside in the space, and my intention will direct energy into the grid when I catch a glimpse of it.

If you want a name on the Healing List, please comment below or email me at pheonixfae@gmail.com. You can also comment on Facebook or Twitter

The Great Hippie Road Trip!

Things have been rough around the Vardo so far this year. Things are starting to turn around, and I want to keep this trend going with a super awesome vacay! We need something to look forward to, and we need a grand adventure.

I have been thinking that the Witchlings and I should start off the summer with an adventure! My stepdaughter is coming out for the summer again, and I thought that Bug, Mojo, my dog Mal, and I could pack up the car and take a camping adventure across the country, pick up LaLa, and continue our trek back.

I have this Route in mind so far, which will take us through Santa Rosa NM to see the Blue Hole the first day, Keystone State Park in Tulsa OK to camp the second night, then on to Terre Haute, IN to see friends the third day. We will then spend a few days with family and friends in Indiana and to pick up LaLa.

On our way home, we plan to stop in Memphis TN, second day we will see Crater of Diamonds in Oaklahoma, then the third night somewhere in the area of Midland, TX. I am open to suggestion here, I picked Midland because of driving time, not coolness.

I would LOVE to get input from all of you for tips and tricks for road trips with 3 kids (3, 8, and 13) and a dog, places to see, and even any neat gear or camping trips.

I have also started a GoFundMe campaign to try to raise some funding for this trip! Donate if you can, share if you could, and if nothing else, leave me a comment to let me know if I'm nuts, or to cheer me on.

Pampered Chicken Salad

A little Kitchen Witchery today. I have been making an effort to get myself back on track, in every area of my life. My Path has suffered from our time in The Vardo, simply because I like to have altars everywhere, and I don't really have one here at all. So, I have been working on prayers and blessings to use and keep my mind in a spiritual place.

I was thinking of this as I made lunch today, and realized that I was not utilizing my best tool for Everyday Magick. I need to get back into Kitchen Witchery. I feed my family, and I should use that opportunity to feed our souls.

So, I took a moment and thought Magickally about how I wanted to make the dish. What do I need right now, in this moment, and how can I use this food to put that intention into the Universe?

Here is the end result. I skewed this toward loving and pampering myself and my family. I am not one for measuring, I just tend to throw things in the mix, so adjust your amounts as you see fit

1 rotisserie chicken, shredded (or about 2-3 cups of chicken)
3 small avacado, diced (Avacado represents luxury, beauty, and love)
1 green onion, diced (onion for protection and healing)
1/2 cup cherry tomatoes (to center and bring love into your heart)
1/2-3/4 cup mayo or plain yogurt
1/4 cup mustard (for protection and to help love be fertile)
salt and pepper to taste. (The chicken I used was seasoned, so I did not add any)
Mix together (I took it a step further here and used a blue spoon, and then served it on blue dishes for peace and calm)
Let sit in the fridge for an hour to let the mixture meld, then serve.

It was super yummy, and made me feel awesome that I took the first steps back toward one of my favorite Magickal practices!

and the "war" rages on

I don't get it, and honestly need someone to explain it to me.
I waited until today to watch the Fox News video. There were several things that caused this delay, but the foremost was I just did not really want to see it.
I knew how pissed off I would get and just did not have the strength to deal.

For anyone else who was hanging out under a rock with me until today, here is the piece of crap video that passes for "news" over at Fox.

Let me tell you the specific thing I don't understand.
It's not the intolerance, or even the ignorance. I don't expect such rabid right-wing mouthpieces to actually have any idea about the Pagan faiths. Why would they? I don't expect them to have the knowledge, just to acknowledge that Paganism is a group of religions that has the right to exist.

It is the absolute and overblown attitude that, although these types of "Christians" are the loudest to demand respect, to give respect to any other faith is somehow damaging to their faith. That is what drives me batshit.

I do not understand this, I never have and unless someone provides a good explaination  I never expect to. I have no grasp of this notion. I do not understand why dismissing the faith of others in some way validates your own.

Do not misunderstand, I have no issue with poking a little fun. I personally found the line about liking to burn incense funny, and I am certainly not above poking a little fun at other religions.

I do, however, find it to be a big leap from joking to ridicule. It is also a big leap to holding the position that you hold the only correct position, and so broker no tolerance for the belief or practice of any other faith.

Freedom of religion, not freedom for your religion. Just because you think we're weird, or even wrong, does not grant you the right to decide our holidays are not worthy of observation.

If you want respect, if you really want to end the "war on Christians", maybe you should stop picking fights.

Pagan beliefs live on locally

By Chris Bergeron/Daily News staff
The MetroWest Daily News

Trick-or-treaters who knock on Heather Jacob’s door this Halloween might be surprised to learn they are
getting candy from a pagan who pray s to ancient deities like Isis and worships the cycles of nature.
A self-described “eclectic pagan’’ who teaches at two area colleges, the Ashland resident believes in “reverence toward
nature and being in touch with its rhythms as a real force.’’
Raised as an Episcopalian, Jacob began studying pre-Christian religions in her late teens and became a practicing pagan in
college.
“That story wasn’t doing it for me. It didn’t fit what my life was coming to,’’ said Jacob. “I’ve always liked studying other
cultures and what truths they held. I want to know what wisdom the ancients had and how to apply that knowledge.’’
Across the region, pagans and Wiccans, a 20th century popularization of pagan beliefs that often includes witchcraft, will
gather this week in homes, bookstores and covens to celebrate the full moon and Samhain, a Gaelic festival usually held on
Oct. 31 , to mark the end of the harvest season and beginning of winter.
Though difficult to confirm, they say their numbers are growing as more young people seek religions that honor nature and
practice tolerance toward those with different orientations.
Baptized a Catholic, Amy Supernor began embracing Wicca at 14 as a way to connect with her Nipmuck heritage.
She took a course in “Wicca 101 ’’ at The Robin’s Nest, a Bellingham store that sells “supplies for all your spiritual and
magickal needs’’ including Tarot cards, incense, herbs and crystals.
A 24-y ear-old massage therapist who works in Hopkinton, Supernor described Wicca as a “nature-based religion similar to
Native American beliefs’’ that celebrates the rhythms of nature and practices “spell work to improve yourself and remove
obstacles.’’
“We’re all on the same path to the same destination, to find our connection with the divine, the divine within us or some
higher power,’’ she said.
Supernor said people sometimes misunderstand the five-starred pentacle bracelet she wears and have asked if she
“worships the devil or casts evil spells.’’
“Particularly around Halloween, I don’t go out of my way to say I’m Wiccan. But I don’t say I’m not,’’ she said.
But Ariana, who asked to only be identified by her Wiccan name, worried her employer and others might misunderstand
why she left the Catholic Church to pursue her interest in “supernatural things.’’
“I’ve always been drawn to nature and found more solace in the ocean or a beautiful sunset than the Bible. I enjoy magic.
Everyone has magical energy that provides an enhanced knowledge of things even if they don’t know it,’’ she said.
But two older men who formerly owned The New Moon occult bookstore said they ’re now pursuing spiritual goals in private
way s away from the public eye.
Bob MacDonald, who first owned the bookstore in Marlborough, said he’d “retreated into private practice’’ in Northborough
where he runs a boarding kennel.
MacDonald, 59, now attends a Unitarian Universalist church but still believes, like Wiccans, he can touch the divine through
nature.
“When I worship I go in the backyard and look around. I don’t feel I need a medium or a preacher to interpret God’s words,’’
he said.
Looking back on his years organizing Wiccan activities from his bookstore, MacDonald said wistfully , “A lot of times it just
got silly .’’
“We attracted a lot of kids. Sometimes it seemed like they just wanted a Goth costume party ,’’ he said. “Now I like to get
together with close friends. Speaking just for my self, by recognizing a divinity in nature, you can be fed by it, nurtured by
it.’’
Once one of the most visible practitioners of Wicca in the region, Sabazius Athame, who later bought the New Moon, said,
“I’ve walked away and fallen in love with God.’’
Born Charles Urban and raised in Framingham, Athame became a Christian minister in Missouri after serving in the U.S. Air
Force. Feeling he “wasn’t connecting with the deepest sources,’’ he studied Asian philosophy , and eventually embraced
Wicca. He took his Wiccan name in 1999 as “part of my passage to the occult.’’
Athame moved the New Moon to Princeton and sold it before moving to Worcester. Now 62, he said he’d felt “some
disenchantment’’ because some Wiccans were becoming so “organized’’ they were cutting themselves off from their pagan
roots.
After battling heart disease and cancer, he said he was sustained through his medical problems “by the one-to-one
relationship with God.’’
“I left the organization but my walk continues,’’ he said.
A witch, pagan and business owner, Tara “Lady T’’ Projin hopes her new store, Charmed, which she describes as a
“metaphysical and occult boutique’’ in downtown Marlborough, provides a welcoming home for “those searching for their
own Magickal path.’’
Located at 163 Main St. in sight of city hall, it sells books, candles, magical supplies and works by local artists.
Jason Matthews, a self-described “psychic empath’’ who can “pick up on the emotional climate of a room or person,’’ gives
astrological readings.
Wayne Needler gives seminars in Wicca and holds a monthly workshop “to make your own wand’’ to use in rituals and
casting spells.
Lady T said Charmed will hold monthly full moon ceremonies and will host a traditional Samhain “dumb supper’’ on Oct. 31
when “the veil between the living and the dead opens at its widest.’’
The meal will feature five courses served in reverse, with desert first, and be eaten in silence so ancestral voices can be
heard from the beyond.
Lady T said she became interested in paganism as a child from her late father’s interest in Gaelic culture and Tarot readings.
She said Charmed staff won’t do readings or sell religious items to customers under 18 without their parents’ permission. She
added that women between 13- and 34-y ears-old are “Wicca’s “fastest growing group.’’
“People are always searching for something more,’’ said Lady T. “People fear what they don’t understand. We’re about
ancient wisdom and respecting people. There’s nothing to fear from us.’’

Hunter's Moon for a scared rabbit

Tonight is the Full Hunter's Moon.
According to the Farmer's Almanac, it is a time when the fields have been cleared and hunters could see their  quarry clearly. A great chance to store up for the coming winter.
According to me, in my own words, it is a time to get in touch with your inner Virgin Huntress and remember that "virgin" means not sexually untouched, but not belonging to a man.

Right now my Huntress is wounded, afraid, and hiding in a hole while my man has become my shield against the world. This is a good thing, because I have a man who will willingly and lovingly shield me from a world that I do not have the strength or skills to face alone right now.

But at this moment, the moon is shining Her perfect light down on me, and so I will go outside and sit with her. I will hope that the next Hunter's Moon that rolls around I will feel like the Huntress and not the Quarry.

Something about Mary

I've mentioned before that I am in an incredibly rough patch at this point in my life. That being said, I have been trying to find comfort wherever I can. I can barely quiet my mind enough to sleep, let alone meditate for more than a few minutes. I have been tending my altars, and in my prayers and offerings, I have felt called by  a Goddess I would have never expected to reach out to me...Mary

Yes, that Mary.
I came from a Christian background in my teens, and when I left the Baptist Church, it was not with anger or disdain.  I simply was no longer happy as a Christian in my heart, and when I found Wicca, and then the broader scope of Paganism in general, I simply felt like I was finally home. I always looked on the Christian God as one of the many Gods I know and recognize, and Mary (both the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene) as Christian Goddesses.
Many years ago, when I was in the hospital after hand surgery, a co-worker very respectfully gave me a Rosary and a book about the history of the Rosary. I still have the Rosary today, because prayer is prayer and there was a lot of love in that gift.

So when things went way south a couple months ago, I dug out that Rosary and prayed it. It felt a little weird, so I made my own Morrigan Rosary and reworked the prayers to fit my needs. (I will post on that hopefully next week) Apparently, the contact with my Christian days, once or maybe even twice removed because I had never been Catholic, and had been given the Rosary a few years into my Pagan life was all the invitation that was needed.

That first week after we closed the shop doors and were at the grocery trying to stretch the last of our money into as many cheap meals as possible. I walked away from the cart, and plucked a candle off the shelf. The Virgin of Guadalupe. I have gone through 7 candles now, and have actually made one of the empty jars into an oil lamp because I have no money to buy more.

I have done some research on her, and one of the aspects that drew me to her, that she represents the Great Mother, has made her a symbol of the Pro-Life and Reproductive Rights battles by the Catholic Church. Regardless of this association, she, as in most cases with Mary, took on the robes and inhabited the sacred sites of the indigenous Goddess, Tonantzin. This is kind of blanket term for Earth Mother Goddesses. The one who caught my eye, not surprisingly, was Cihuacoatl. She is an Aztec Goddess of childbirth, warfare, and crossroads. So, that light is burning, reminding me again that I have warriors and mothers, who are usually one in the same, holding me and helping to remind me that although I am weak now, strength is waiting for me to claim, when I'm ready to claim it.

Feeling the Kindle love

You guys are awesome!

My book Magickal Life, was downloaded 697 times during it's free promotional week on Amazon! I don't care if I never make a dime off of the book, twice I have put my work out there, after being a writer since I was a teenager, and between the two nearly 1,200 people have read my work. It's such an amazing feeling, and it's a good shot in the arm right before NaNoMriMo starts next week. It's been so hard to find positive things to concentrate on, and I'm so glad I took that big first step.

I have always been so afraid to let anyone see my work. It really sucks that I had to hit total rock bottom emotionally to do it, but it's out there and that big first step is now out of the way. I'll keep you posted on my NaNoWriMo progress. I have book two of the Through the Veil series pretty much outlined and hope to get the first draft of it knocked out for the most part. If I don't drag my feet editing, I hope to have it published on Kindle by the first of the year. Much love and blessings to you all!

Hippie's little book of Magick

It's not big, it's not flashy, but I've been working on it on and off for the last year and a half and it's going to be available as a FREE Amazon Kindle download Monday the 22nd to Friday the 26th.

Please just click the book cover and download your FREE copy. I hope you enjoy it and can work some of my ideas into your Magickal practice!

And although you may have missed the free promotion on it, please take a peek at my first fiction book

Bright Blessings!

Hippie Samhain!

Samhain is upon us yet again, and the Wheel of the Year has turned back to the beginning. The Veil has thinned, and the Other Side is bleeding through. By now you know, we like to keep things simple here in the Hippie household. That does not, however, make our observation of this Festival any less meaningful or powerful.

Our Jack-o-Lanterns will be lit, to guide our ancestors to our door and drive away those spirits who mean to be tricksters. We will dress up in costumes to fool those same tricksters into thinking we are one of them. At dinner tonight, we will set a place at our table for those who have passed. We will pass a cup and toast to memories of them, and when we have finished leave an offering out for the spirits and the faeries. Once our girls are down from their trick or treat sugar high and tucked into bed, The Hubs and I will walk, hand in hand, to our outdoor altar and call a quiet circle. There we will thank the Quarters and the Lady and Lord for the blessings of the dying year. Then we will stand in silence, feeling the night and looking at the stars, until we are moved to open our circle,

Whatever you do to mark this day, may it be blessed, and may you all be blessed in the coming year. Magick and ritual need not be grand, showy, or great solemn and complicated ritual, although those have their place. If all you are able to do is light a candle and quietly acknowledge Samhain tonight, that is as powerful as any ritual, because it put Samhain in your heart and mind.
Brightest Blessings

Dirty Little Secret Circle

I'm not gonna lie, I am loving this show.
Of course Magickally it's bullshit, but I love it for the same reasons I loved Passions when it was on NBC. It's a ridiculous guilty pleasure.
Maybe I'm supposed to be all up in arms about how my "culture" is portrayed in movies and TV, but I love most of the cheesy witch themed crap that Hollywood churns out.
I love Hocus Pocus, The Craft, I was bummed when the Witches of Eastwick show was cancelled. My love for witchy stereotypes is well known. My Mom, who is a Christian but is absolutely open and supportive of my Paganism sent me this care package for Halloween.
here's the back of the necklace.
So there it is. I'm that guy.
I will say, however, that I feel it is better to own hundreds of years of sterotypes than to fight them. In my experience it has started a lot of conversations that were useful in educating people about the true nature of us "dirty Pagans" when there is a familiar common ground. So take it how you will, hate it if you must, but don't dismiss a great guilty pleasure just because it makes you feel a little too guilty.

Congratz Mrs. B!

I just saw over on Confessions of a Pagan Soccer Mom that not only did Mrs. B WIN the top 25 Faith Blogs but there were 12 Pagan blogs in the final top 25! I think that's tremendous! There was a lot of drama about Pagan blogs even being "allowed" in the Faith category of the Top 25, so I am very proud that the Pagan blogoshere stood up for out choice to be Pagan and to want to blab about it on the internets. So take a minute and swing by CPSM and congratulate her, and check out some of the other great blogs that are in the Top 25, both Pagan and "mainstream".

Little Lady

The Hubs went back to work a little over a month ago, that's when and why we "switched back" and I am now at home working, housekeeping, gardening and homeschooling. The Hubs really likes the job which is basically pulling metal out of construction and mining debris to be recycled. Much to the girls delight, he brings home "pretties", rocks and cool pieces of metal. I spent some time today looking up geology curriculum for the Ladybug so she can identify the rocks, minerals, and metals he brings home. I have gotten some "pretties" as well, but none I love as much as this.
He saw her going down the belt and chased her down, almost knocking down his supervisor. I love him for doing that. She is pretty perfect, silver and black, cradling her womb where life stirs.
I have lots and lots of cool stuff, as far as my faith is concerned. I have even blogged about the plethora of altars in and around our home. Lots of blessed tools, statues, stones, pentacles, wands, cloaks, and athames, but this is now my favorite piece of  pagan paraphernalia.
Above the fact it is so completely awesome that some melted nickel happened to find it's way in this shape and then rolled happily past my hard working Hubs to be plucked out and placed in my hand, she reminds me of a simple truth: I don't need any of my cool stuff! Don't get me wrong, I like stuff, a lot. I have my pagan paraphernalia and tools spread all through the house in cabinets, on altars and shrines, even outside in the yard, but I know I don't really need it.  Because my Path weaves my faith and practice into my everyday life, all that stuff rarely even gets used, except maybe Sabbats or High Ritual. My faith is more spread through the the day like salt in cooking. Not too fancy, but it doesn't taste right without it. You still might get fancy, add in layers and fixings, but you leave the salt. I will continue to have cool stuff, and to make cool stuff ,  and to use it, but I have nestled that speckled little piece of metal onto my kitchen shrine, and into my heart, sent by my Lady and given in love by my beloved.

Top 25 Faith Blogs

Along with diving back into blogging, I have been trying to catch up on reading blogs that I just have not been on in months. On Confessions of a Pagan Soccer Mom I saw that she, among many others, are up for the Circle of Mom's Top 25 Faith Blogs! I think that's amazing to see Pagan faith blogs right up there with the mainstream. There is, of course, drama about Pagan blogs being allowed in a contest about 'faith blogs' but I encourage you to vote and stay away from the comments...never feed the trolls, especially Christian trolls. I have so far resisted, and hope to continue to be strong, I got a little taste on Mrs. B's post about it and I know I will just get mad. I just keep telling myself no one ever changed their beliefs because they lost the argument. If you have a faith-based blog you follow and love, please click HERE, look for it, and vote before June 8th! You can vote once a day. If nothing else, take a peek and maybe get a new faith blog to follow!!
